This inspiring part-time course is ideal for anyone looking for a really thorough, practical introduction to interior design and decoration, whether for a specific project or just for their own interest. While it is not directly aimed at those looking to gain a professional qualification and work in the industry, it could also provide a valuable first step for anyone considering more in depth study.
Our practising professional designers will take students chronologically through the design process – from setting the budget through to assembling a cohesive design scheme. Students will be shown how to develop their creative ideas through a combination of lectures and hands-on workshops. As well as talks on colour, wall and floorcoverings, textiles, upholstery, consideration of window treatments and lighting, the course covers specific room by room factors, integrating new technologies and how to enhance existing spaces.
By the end of the course, students should have the confidence to plan simple room layouts, create a cohesive look, put decorative schemes together and communicate ideas to contractors.
The syllabus includes:-
- The starting point (where to begin, how to get inspiration, prioritising the budget)
- Planning room layouts (how to make an impact, improve proportions, create comfortable seating areas, basics of kitchen and bathroom planning)
- Developing a style (building up a look)
- The decorative palette (developing a scheme, effective use of pattern and texture)
- Lighting (ideas for lighting on a room by room basis, creating mood night and day)
- Wall and floorcoverings (paints, papers, hard and soft flooring, advice on sourcing)
- Textiles (an introduction, what to use where)
- Upholstery and trimmings (how to choose, practical and decorative considerations)
- Window treatments (ideas for inspiration, treatments for different shaped windows and rooms, working with a curtainmaker)
- Styling and display (mixing inherited and contemporary pieces, using antiques in today's interiors)
