The Open Learning Diploma in Interior Design has evolved to meet the demands of increased industry standards and the new age of technology.

Updated Autumn 2011, this new course is designed to work with the student, ease them into the subject and introduce them to key terminology and technical processes in an approachable manner. This allows the student to quickly build confidence, experiment within the field of design and create ability led independent learning.

The core principles have not changed. It is important that students learn the basic elements of concept, creation and technical drawing. However, the content of each design brief is now linked at each section of the course to show clear progress at each stage and encourage completion of the course.

Overall the KLC Open Learning Team are confident that these changes will create even more accomplished and dedicated designers that will be at the forefront of interior design throughout their careers with this new course as the foundation to their skill set.

A change in career
This course has been specifically designed for students who want to gain a recognised vocational qualification in order to follow a career in the interior design industry and need to fit their studying around existing work and family commitments. It assumes no previous experience in the subject and covers everything needed in order to make a career change.

Work at your own pace
The great advantage of an Open Learning Course is the flexibility that it offers. With no time limit and the classroom of their choice, students remain in complete control of their study programme. Using our Course Timetable Planner, students can set the start date and schedule that they want to work to (*).

Interactive Study
Students work from a combination of printed and on-line material that cover every aspect of interior design, backed up with the support and guidance of KLC’s dedicated tutor team.

The printed course material is presented in an elegant designers' study folder. Fully illustrated and in colour throughout, the course units are inspirational and written in user-friendly language to make learning easy.

Practical case studies are provided throughout many of the tutorials, so that students can see how the lessons are applied to real-life situations.

On-Line Resources
Central to the course is the online curriculum containing information on how the course works, additional study units, project briefs and other study support materials. The student support section of the website also acts as a platform for further research and allows interaction with other students, as well as access to students’ own personal records.

  • The first set of work must be submitted within 2 years of enrolling

Practical Project Work
The course contains exercises throughout the text, enabling students to build up their knowledge and skills and ensuring a thorough understanding of each Section before project work is undertaken.

As students progress through the course, they are required to complete and submit six sets of project work for assessment. The work is marked and returned, together with detailed written feedback, plus advice to help with the production of the next section’s projects. The Section 5 commercial project and the Section 6 final domestic project bring together all the skills learned throughout the course.

Build Your Confidence
The course content is delivered in manageable sized units which build on each other, meaning that the subject matter can be mastered in gradual stages. This makes the course suitable even for complete beginners: students gain confidence and a sense of achievement as they make steady progress with their studies, which is important if you are fitting the course around the demands of a busy life.
